McCain Scarborough expansion approved by local council

McCain Foods has had its plans for a £100 million expansion of its potato processing facility in Scarborough recommended by the planning committee of Scarborough Borough Council.

The plans for the Eastfield site include upgrades to equipment and renewable energy generation, as well as environmental measures such as odour reduction technology and landscaping. The company, which has been on the site for almost 50 years, says that the expansion will help to secure jobs in the area.

Bill Bartlett, corporate affairs director for McCain, commented, “We are delighted at the outcome of the planning committee’s decision to recommend approval of the renewal plans for our Scarborough site. This will see over GBP100m invested into our Scarborough facility. Established in Eastfield almost 50 years ago, the McCain Foods Scarborough facility is one of the company’s most successful sites. As the largest private employer in Scarborough and partner to many suppliers and community organizations in the area, we are dedicated to our operations here.”

McCain to invest in Scarborough site

McCain Foods has announced plans to update its manufacturing facility at Scarborough in Yorkshire. Ahead of a formal planning application, the company has shared details of its plans for the site at Eastfield locally.

According to the company the £100 million investment is necessary to secure the success of the plant for decades to come and help it meet growing demand for new products. As well as upgrading equipment, the new plans include landscaping, an anaerobic digester to produce renewable energy and state-of-the-art odour reduction technology.

McCains’ Corporate Affairs Director, Bill Bartlett, commented, “This is a significant investment for McCain, and one that will allow us to meet the ongoing increased demand for our products, address long-term capacity and capability opportunities and deliver the latest technology and broader environmental benefits. This proposal certainly secures our operations in Scarborough and continued employment in the area for decades to come.”

The news comes just a month after the company said it would be closing its cold storage operations at the site, putting 74 jobs at risk.

The leader of Scarborough Borough Council, Councillor Derek Bastiman, said, “This is an extremely significant announcement from McCain, which cements the company’s commitment to Scarborough and the Yorkshire coast, and from which our area’s economy stands to benefit massively.”

McCain Foods fined £800k for safety issues

McCain Foods has been fined £800,000 following an incident last year at its Whittlesey factory near Peterborough.

On 21 August 34-year engineer Adam Regan was examining a conveyer belt when his arm became trapped in the machine and was almost severed. Although his arm was saved he now has limited movement in his hand.

An inspection by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the conveyor did not have the correct guards and that an internal risk assessment by the company failed to recognise the potential danger.

McCain Foods (GB) Limited of Havers Hill, Eastfield Scarborough, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, and was fined £800,000 with costs of £12,831.51.
